Neurological conditions
The Neurological service is provided by The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, tel: 01924 212554.
The Neurological Ability team supports people (aged sixteen to sixty-five years) with long-term neurological problems. Neurological problems include multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.
The team includes: occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, clinical psychologists, team therapy assistants and administrative staff. They help people to maintain their independence and manage their condition.
Therapists carry out assessments, give advice and provide help to anyone who is referred, providing they are registered with a GP in our district.
What happens once you have been referred to the team?
Once you have been referred, a therapist will meet you and complete an assessment form. This helps them to understand your needs and pass details on to relevant team members.
They then agree a therapy programme with you. This may include a referral to other members of the team, or other services provided by NHS Wakefield District. This could be:
- wheelchair services;
- the podiatry department; or
- to external agencies, like housing and social care.
The team then lets whoever referred you know about your treatment programme. You may be discharged from the team's care following the assessment or after therapy has been completed. However, you can always re-refer yourself at any time in the future - if it has been agreed with the therapist that your condition may change. If you would like to know more about this service, please call 01924 212554.
